Bill was an avid reader who enjoyed gaining knowledge throughout his life. He served four years in the United States Navy and retired from Bellsouth Communications and the Hoover City School System. After retirement, his gift and enjoyment of electrical and plumbing was the pastime that he loved. He had a strength of faith and a kind and caring heart. He blessed so many and always helped everyone any time he was asked. Bill loved his family and will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lillian Riffe Hamm and his 3 children: Lori Hayes (Phillip), David Hamm (Karen), Suzanne Kent (Mike). He had 6 grandchildren: John Hayes (Johanna), Cherilyn Babb, Samantha Mudderman, Tabatha Hamm, Catherine Carlton (Austin), Erin Kent and 8 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Carlos Hamm and his sister, Marverine Holifield.
A private service will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Willie Holifield, Buddy Riffe, Stanley Lawley, Winford O’Neal, John Hayes, Phillip Hayes, Mike Kent, and all of his beloved nephews.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at DCH Regional Medical Center for their kindness, care, and compassion. They are true heroes.
