Lloyd Davenport, age 89, passed away at home on August 22, 2024. He was born on Kent Farm in Siluria, AL, on March 16, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lorene Davenport and two brothers, Charles and Julius “Bug” Davenport.
Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Anita; his four children, Alan Davenport (Cindy), Gary Davenport (Teresa), Jeff Davenport, and Debra Yancy (Craig); nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren (#7 due in December); sisters, Sis Braswell and Betty Wilson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In his early years, Lloyd enjoyed hunting and fishing with his daddy, family and friends. He loved his mama’s rice pudding and chocolate cake. He met the love of his life, Anita Wyatt Davenport, at 15 and she was 14. He joined Elliottsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church (FPCA) in 1963.
Lloyd began work at 15 years old at Buck Creek Cotton Mill where he worked for eight years and then spent seven years working at American Brake Shoe. He retired after 30 years at Griffin Wheel with his last 13 years in Ohio as a foreman/supervisor.
After retirement, Lloyd returned to Smokey Road. He bought a camper, truck and boat which brought him great joy on the numerous trips he and Anita made with grandkids and family. His favorite activities were crappie fishing on the Alabama River and flounder fishing at St. Andrews State Park in Panama City, playing Skip-Bo, fish fries and grilling ribs. He was a skilled gardener, loved gospel music and enjoyed Men’s Fellowship Breakfast at church. Lloyd served as a deacon and elder at church and also served as the President of The Harless Cemetery Association for 16 years.
Lloyd will always be remembered as taking care of his family, church family and friends whether it was a visit at the hospital, an encouraging phone call or making his boiled oatmeal cookies.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Affinity Hospice team – Kolie, Katrina, Charlie, Regi and Katie.
A visitation for Lloyd will be held Friday, August 23, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church Alabaster, 8828 Hwy 119, Alabaster, AL 35007. Guests are encouraged to wear Crimson Tide attire in his memory.
His funeral service will occur Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church Alabaster. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at Harless Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama. Rev. Matthew Ingram will officiate.
