ANN KIMBROUGH KELLY passed away April 23, 2024, at the age of 88. Throughout her life on earth, Ann was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt, and friend. Described by many as “just the sweetest lady,” she was a woman of strong faith who faced life’s challenges with courage, grace, strength, and determination.
Born in 1935 to Mildred McConnell Kimbrough and Franklin D. Kimbrough, Sr., Ann spent her early years in Pine Hill, AL and Selma, AL. After graduating from A.G. Parrish High School in Selma, she enrolled in Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo) where she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work, and among other things, served as Chief Justice of the Student Court and was named Miss Alabama College by the student body in 1957.
She married the love of her life, James Agee Kelly shortly after college graduation. Following completion of his military service, they returned to Montevallo, AL in 1959. Ann worked tirelessly to support Agee in his career and to raise their children, Karen and Jim. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and later as a Cub Scout leader and was regularly involved in activities with Agee and/or the kids.
Ann was a long-time member of and held leadership positions in Montevallo Study Club. She served the University of Montevallo as a member of the National Alumni Association Board of Directors, as 1957 Class Representative (raising funds and planning class reunions) and chaired the 2001 Annual Fund campaign with daughter Karen. In 2007 she was honored with the University of Montevallo Good Neighbor Award. She volunteered with the Parnell Memorial Library Foundation and the American Village. Ann also enjoyed many years of friendship and fun with members of the Yomaso bridge club.
A lifelong Methodist, she was extremely involved as a member of the First United Methodist Church in Montevallo and the United Methodist Women, serving in a variety of leadership roles including Circle Leader, President of UMW, and Treasurer of UMW. She was a member of the FUMC Administrative Council, the McMillian Sunday school class, and served on and/or chaired numerous committees over the years including the Care and Contact Committee. After moving to Homewood in 2008, she also became involved at Trinity United Methodist Church, serving as a liaison between her senior living community, Brookdale Place and the Trinity ministers, and as a member of the United Methodist Women and the Cartwright Sunday school class.
Ann was preceded in death by her loving husband Agee, her parents, sisters Patricia Brock, Mary Sumrall, Frances Esco, and brother Franklin D. Kimbrough, Jr. She is survived by daughter Karen Kelly, son and daughter-in-law Jim and Janice Kelly, granddaughters Lindsey (Mark) Whitlock and Elizabeth (Josh) Cornett, great-grandson Asa Agee Cornett, nieces, nephews, many wonderful friends, and her beloved cat Prissy.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Just Like Family, especially Niki Patton, Michelle Patton-Tyler, LaCondra (Connie) Jennings, and Lois Harris for their loving care.
Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church in Montevallo, AL on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00. Private burial will be Sunday afternoon in Montevallo.
