She was born the sixth of eight children to the late Frederick Christian Vollrath and Bertha Emma Welteroth Vollrath, July 11, 1911, in Lake Carey, PA. Evelyn married the late Harold Charles Maynard in April of 1933 in Johnson City, NY. Together they raised four children in Philadelphia before moving the family to California in the mid-1940’s.
Evelyn was the granddaughter of Prussian emigrant, Peter Francis Welteroth, a Civil War veteran who enlisted in the Union Army in 1863, fought in the Battle of Cedar Creek in 1864, was captured, and later released from Libby Prison in 1865. Through the battles, his captivity and later release, Evelyn’s grandfather was a shining star in her eyes; his unwavering determination and courage to live a life built on the promises of God, bore loud testimony in how she, too, lived her life. This legacy lives on.
Widowed at 55, Evelyn led a self-sufficient lifestyle. As matriarch, her love of family was an absolute, felt by all. She was a dedicated telephone company executive secretary who retired in 1976. Evelyn was a long-standing member of Neighborhood Christian Fellowship in Covina, where she was the prayer chain coordinator for a number of years. She was a gentle, kind soul and always had a kind word and perpetual cheerful outlook. Evelyn loved to travel and, through the years, had many adventures. She also enjoyed chronicling those trips in scrapbooks and photo albums, with wild captions of witty facts and observations. Evelyn was an avid reader, loved playing (and winning) at bingo, and habitually completed her daily crossword puzzles in record time without the aid of a dictionary.
Evelyn is survived by two children, Alan Lyman Maynard of Newberry Springs, CA and Marcia Evelyn Turner of Phelan, CA; seven grandchildren, Evelyn Whitaker of Bend, OR (husband, Cameron); Sandy Thornton of Salem, OR (husband, Jason); Janice Archuleta of Paoli, IN (husband, Chris); Stephen Maynard of Lorton, VA; John Maynard of Yucaipa, CA (wife, Maggie); Ernest Turner of Phelan, CA (wife, Cheryl); Bob Turner of Hesperia, CA (wife, Jackie); eleven great grandchildren, Amber Wood of Canby, OR (husband, Merle); Shamara Swartwout of Salem, OR (husband, Derek); Richard Elsom of Ann Arbor, MI (wife, Amber); Timothy Martin of French Lick, IN (wife, Jazmine); Robert Turner of Hesperia, CA; Tawnee Martin of Paoli, IN; Krystal Turner of Hesperia, CA; Alan Turner of Phelan, CA; Elizabeth Thornton of Salem, OR; Ian and Lizzy Holliday of Yucaipa, CA; and five great-great grandchildren, Kasyria, Nikodemus, and Alexavier Turocy of Philadelphia, PA; Oliver Swartwout of Salem, OR; and, Mallory Martin of French Lick, IN.
