After high school Tim attended Freeman Junior College in SD. Not wanting to continue his education during the Vietnam War era, Tim applied for 1W alternative service classification. After receiving his conscientious objector status, he worked at Prairie View Mental Hospital for two years in Newton, Kansas. It was during this time he became committed to social services. Tim began his BA in Social Work at Wichita State University where he met his future wife Sylvia. After completing his degree, Tim and Sylvia joined the Mennonite Voluntary Service and moved to Seattle with an assignment at Seattle Mental Health Institute. Tim began as a Day Treatment Counselor and later worked as a Mental Health Outreach Counselor.
Tim's interest in the Mennonite faith took him to Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries, now Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, in Elkhart IN for two years. It was at that time his life's vision was developed as a Mennonite and his religious commitment to peace and social services increased.
Upon returning to Seattle he worked with the Fellowship of Reconciliation, in construction, and as lay pastor at the Seattle Mennonite Church.
In 1983 Tim and his family moved to rural Monroe WA. For the next 28 years he worked for Senior Services of Snohomish County (Homage) as a minor home repairman and Director of Housing and Minor Home Repair. Sylvia had a family home child daycare for 31 years. Tim helped with many projects for the daycare including: fencing, building equipment and repairing toys. After retirement he helped care for the children, from infants to middle schoolers and derived a great sense of accomplishment and enjoyment.
All the while he continued developing the property and produced a grand organic garden. He shared his bounty with neighbors, friends, and the local food bank. During 2020-21 he often said he would never have survived quarantine without his beautiful land. He loved being outdoors, fishing, traveling, camping, and especially loved his family and grandkids.
Tim is survived by wife Sylvia, son Isaac (wife Eri), daughter Elena (husband Bo Yount) and two granddaughters Mizuki and Makana Mierau of Washington State. And one sister Roine Klassen (husband Don) of South Dakota.
