Some of Ben’s fondest childhood memories include spending time with his grandparents Woody and Edith at their home in Centralia, trips to Alaska, weekends at the cabin on Lake Cavanaugh, and hunting and fishing with his father and brother.
After graduating from Woodinville High School in 1997, Ben joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Following boot camp, he was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska aboard the USCGC Firebush. He spent two years in Kodiak, and then moved back to Washington, joining Station Seattle. After the 9/11 attacks, Ben became a founding member of a new unit; the Maritime Safety and Security Team, MSST 91101, based out of Seattle. In 2006, Ben joined the team on the USCGC Henry Blake, based out of Everett. He then spent a short time at ISC Seattle, finishing his career back at Station Seattle. Ben was retired from the Coast Guard on April 20, 2009.
Ben married Jayme Loder on August 27, 2005. He taught Jayme to snowboard, and ride quads. They spent many weekends camping and riding quads with friends and family in Cle Elum. Always at their side was their beloved dog, Cabela.
Ben loved duck and goose hunting, rifle and archery deer hunting, and shooting skeet and trap. He liked teaching kids to fish, and took great pride in volunteering for the annual Kids fishing derby in Monroe with his brother-in-law, father-in-law and dear friend Ron Lavigueure.
In the summer of 2007, Ben was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor called a Chordoma. Throughout the last four years of his life, Ben endured several surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy. He impressed those around him by staying active in his interests and refusing to dwell on his situation. Ben’s capacity for remaining strong and positive over the years was both inspiring and encouraging. As with all facets of his life, Ben fought his cancer with dignity, bravery, patience and kindness.
On July 12, 2010, Ben’s daughter, Elle, was born. He fell instantly for his baby girl and she became the positive force behind Ben’s fight with cancer. Elle has her daddy’s uplifting, easy-going personality and is truly a blessing.
Ben’s cancer progressed quickly in August, and he passed in his home on August 29, 2011 with Jayme by his side. Ben will forever be remembered for his generous, respectful and loving nature. He was a dedicated family man, trustworthy shipmate and a true friend.
