She was born July 5, 1943 in Haywood County, NC to the late John and Pauline Rigdon. She was the youngest of four children. One preceded her in death.
Margaret married James “Leigh” Skinner IV on December 15, 1960 in Chapel Hill, NC. She is survived by her husband, Leigh; children, Elizabeth, Katherine, Jennifer, and James; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Margaret and her husband spent the first ten years of marriage travelling the US, frequently camping in assorted parks in Canada, Alaska, and the US. They lived in California for two years and Boston for two years before moving back to North Carolina. They settled in Charlotte in 1970 where they started their family. In 2013, she and her husband moved to their farm in Waxhaw, NC.
Margaret was a nurturing homemaker who spent her life surrounded by dance recitals, swim meets, baseball and soccer games. Growing up, she always said she wanted to have four children, live in a big house, have a house at the beach and a house in the mountains. She enjoyed them all.
Margaret had many interests, including duplicate bridge, gardening, hosting family dinners, and watching her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and dance performances. She enjoyed researching family history and became a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to travel, including cruises to South America, Bahamas, and Alaska. Her varied interests also included bush hogging pastures on her farms.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, on behalf of Margaret, the family would appreciate donations to the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina at P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361.
McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is honored to serve the family of Margaret Rigdon Skinner.
