He was born in Union County on September 6, 1928, son of the late Vern and Reecie Helms.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Jovina Heffner Helms and by his daughter, Ethel Diane Early.
Mr. Helms is survived by his children, Soffie Blanchard, Brownie Helms (Betty Lou), Danny Helms, Nelson Helms Jr. (Rhonda) and Mary Louise Helms; grandchildren, Kim Pate, Jennifer McPhatter, Nelson Junior Helms, James Kevin Helms, Mark Helms, Frankie Early, Joey Wheeler and Michelle Wheeler. He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until 2:00pm Monday, October 26, 2020 at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe . A service to celebrate his life will begin at 2:00pm in McEwen Funeral Home's Colonial Chapel with interment following in Lakeland Memorial Park.
