Hattie Lee Christian

Affectionately known by many as “Nana”, Hattie was born on March 30,1939 in Matoaka, WV to parents John Franklin Wood and Margaret Elizabeth Wood. Hattie “Nana” was a graduate of Spanishburg High School, Class of 1958, in Spanishburg, WV. One of the most special things to her was the annual class reunion and she attended just about every year as it truly was important to her. She especially looked forward to seeing her friends and classmates, especially her BFF Mabel. She was a dedicated wife, loving mother, “The Best Nana”, loyal friend, consistent second mom, and true angel. Most of her life’s work was in the home, caring for her husband, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her mother, in-laws, extended family, family friends, and later her long-time companion. She truly served her family with a servant and mother’s heart and loved them fiercely. She was (and still is) a woman of God, a prayer warrior, and a great example of Jesus Christ’s love and grace. She attended Covenant Life Center Church in Charlotte, NC for many years and served in many capacities. She was a wonderful cook, diligent gardener, talented artist, and graceful lady. Hattie “Nana” was humble, kind, funny, one of the classiest and most beautiful ladies you could ever meet, and honestly the sweetest woman on the face of the earth according to everyone that met or who was blessed to know her. She loved the color Aqua (do not call it teal), Thomas Kinkade’s art, Oldies but Goodies music, Sweating to the Oldies workouts, and dancing (Jitterbug), which she did with only hand motions up until a couple days before her passing. She loved her White Diamonds perfume (my grandfather bought it for her religiously), her mornings at the kitchen table with her Bible and coffee, her yardwork and flowers, babies, and her huge gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas with a house full of people. Anyone that didn’t have a place to go to eat during the holidays was always welcome at her house and often attended. She was always full of joy and love, and when you went to visit with her, she would light up and make you feel like you were the most special person in the world. However, it was truly her that was the most special person and she will be dearly missed by all.

Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret Wood of Spanishburg, WV; her brother, John (Johnny) Wood Jr. of Pleasant View, TN; her husband of 40 years, Daniel Lee Christian of Monroe, NC; and her long-time companion of 24 years, James Clifford Price of Monroe, NC. She is survived by her 5 daughters (spouses), Cynthia (Cindy) Delane (Tommy) of Monroe, NC, Debra (Debbie) Rutledge (Randy) of Broken Bow, OK, Wendie Woollen (David) of Marshville, NC, Melissa (Missy) Potts of Nixa, MO, and Danielle Clewell (Tom) of Monroe, NC. She is also survived by 5 granddaughters; 10 grandsons; 13 great grandchildren, and one on the way; 1 great-great grandchild; sisters, Sue Christian of Winston-Salem, NC and Geraldine (Jere) Jeffries of Monroe, NC; and brothers, Carl (Tommy) Wood (Tammy) of Ashland City, TN, Fredrick (Buzzy) Wood (Belinda) of Letart, TN, Ricky Wood (Dreama) of Spanishburg, WV, and Rueben Wood (Terri) of Ashland City, TN.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina. A funeral service to celebrate Hattie’s life will be held following the visitation at 1:15 pm with burial immediately following the service at Lakeland Memorial Park.
