Born on January 18, 1928 to the late Burdette and Wilma Crowell, Eloise was a native of Union County and graduated from Indian Trail High School in 1945. She worked at a hosiery mill and also worked as a children’s librarian at the Union County Public Library for many years. She enjoyed reading her Bible, traveling, and playing card games. She especially loved her family and her Lord Jesus Christ. She loved going to church and was a lifelong and faithful member of West Monroe Baptist Church. She served in various ministries of the church including Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and director of the Joy Club. She always had a smile on her face and never met a stranger.
Along with her parents, Eloise is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Mills; husband, Manley C. Ellis; son, Reggie Mills; sisters, Lucille Clontz, Cleo Horne, and Joyce Derrick; brothers, Roland Crowell, Joe Crowell, and Tommy Crowell. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Mills Whitley; son, Steve Mills (Michelle); 6 grandchildren, Chad Whitley (Jennifer), Tiffany Mills (Matthew), Jay Mills, John Mills (Janine), Ashley Knight (Chris), and Alex Mills; 7 great-grandchildren, Brett Mills (Brittani), Tyler Mills (Chloe), Seth Whitley (Lauren), Kristina Whitley, Maddox Knight, Dexton Knight, and Brox Knight; 1 great-great granddaughter, Maeve Ivy Whitley; sister, Jean Russell; and daughter-in-law, Terri Mills.
A service to celebrate Eloise’s life will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 2:00 pm at West Monroe Baptist Church, located at 1212 Icemorlee Street, Monroe, North Carolina. A visitation will then follow after the service with burial then following the visitation at Lakeland Memorial Park.
