Born in Bronx, NY and having been raised in Bronxville, NY, she was a current resident of Ansonia, CT. She was the daughter of Francis Joseph Monahan II and Kathleen Walsh Monahan.
She graduated from Harriman College in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Services. She subsequently graduated from St. Joseph Hospital Nursing School in 1977. She began her career as a Registered Nurse working in Westchester County, NY. Having then moved to Connecticut, she worked at Bridgeport Healthcare Center for over a decade. She followed that working at Garner Prison as a Registered Nurse up until her retirement in 2004. Her career went into early retirement as she battled to overcome her struggle with lung cancer. She was a 16 year lung cancer survivor.
Liz will always be remembered for having spent the latter part of her life as an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She was very much the family matriarch as was her mother before her. Liz was the most loving, caring, and genuine person. She loved to spread her love to everyone and when she did you could feel it. She will always be remembered for being such a bright light in everyone’s life.
She is survived by her husband Gary McDermott of 42 years, her loving daughter Heather McDermott Alves and her husband Felipe Alves, as well as her amazing grandchildren Mackenzie, Connor and Liam Alves. Her grandchildren were her absolute pride and joy! She loved them endlessly, and they will miss her every day. She was predeceased by her cherished dog Emma with whom she shared 16 wonderful years of family memories. She was predeceased by both her parents, her brother Francis Monahan III, her sister Maureen Monahan Myers and her sister Kathleen Monahan Murphy. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered by her family and friends.
Friends are invited to calling hours Tuesday, April 27th from 3pm to 7pm at Spadaccino & Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT 06468. Immediately following will be a Funeral Service also held at 7pm at same location. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you celebrate Liz’s life and keep her cherished family in your prayers.
