Thomas J. Taylor, III, a native of Mobile, AL and resident of Point Clear, AL, died on Saturday, August 18 surrounded by family. Born in 1934, he was the son of the late Thomas James Taylor, Jr. and Virginia Rhen Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Hinrichs Taylor (Cathy); his sisters Margaret Taylor Carroll (Jim) of West Hartford, CT and Virginia Taylor Otts (Mac) of Mobile, AL; his children Thomas J. Taylor, IV (Debbie) of Spanish Fort, AL, Tracy Taylor Shoulders (Jimmy) of Spartanburg, SC, Mikell W. Taylor, Sr. (Claire) of Mobile, AL, and Carrye Taylor Campbell (James) of Durango, CO; his grandchildren Tom Taylor, Taylor Shoulders (Heidi), Mary Mikell Shoulders, William Taylor, Annie Taylor, Will Campbell, and Jeanne Campbell; one great granddaughter, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Tommy was born and raised in Mobile, AL. He attended University Military School where he graduated in 1951. He went on to attend Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), where he graduated with a degree in chemistry. Tommy then went on active duty with the US Airforce for two years, and afterwards he was in the reserves for ten years retiring as a captain. He began his professional career working in the family Naval Stores business at Dixie Pine Chemical Co. in Hattiesburg, MS. From there, he moved on to Taylor, Lowenstein & Co. and eventually Mobile Rosin Oil Co. where he worked for over 47 years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for many years, and he was on the building committee for the new church. Later he joined Christ Church Cathedral where he attended until his death. Tommy was very involved in his community. He served on the Board of Trustees at University Military School, UMS Preparatory School and UMS-Wright for many years, he was on the Board of Directors at the YMCA, and he was a member of several mystic organizations. Tommy was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. He was a member of the Mobile Big Game Fishing Club since its founding. The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice and the many Bright Star nurses who cared for him at his home. Memorials may be made to UMS-Wright or Wilmer Hall Children’s Home. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 23 at 10:00 in the Chapter House at Christ Church Cathedral, 115 South Conception Street, and funeral services will follow in the sanctuary at 11:00. Interment will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery following the service.
