Stewart "Stu" England

Stewart “Stu” England, 76 of Mobile, Ala., passed away on December 16, 2019 peacefully at home with his loving wife by his side in Lillian, Ala. A loving and devoted husband and father, Stewart was predeceased in death by his father Jack Agerton, his mother Roselyn G. England, stepfather Jack England, sister Joanne E. Ball, and sister Jacqueline E. Barrilleaux.

He is survived by his wife of more than 41 years, Kathryn Wooley England, sons Steve Bowen England, Stewart Jarrod England (Caitlin Towle), and Matthew Edward England (Nina Angelo), his precious granddaughters Ella Sophia England and Ophelia Flor England whom he absolutely adored, and his friend and father-in-law Floyd Edward Wooley.

Stewart was the 7th employee (#0007) hired by Degussa Chemical (Evonik) in Theodore, Alabama, and worked there until his retirement in 2004 after being diagnosed with mantel-cell lymphoma. During his more than 30 years at Degussa he served in many roles primarily focused on oversight and management of the plant’s electrical, instrumentation, HVAC, and refrigeration needs. While there he also helped to focus the plant’s tremendous resources and manpower on various philanthropic and community relations projects which included beginning their Habitat for Humanity program and support of Mobile’s Penelope House. Prior to Degussa, he also worked for Mobile International Paper Co. (Moss Point, Miss.) and Ciba-Geigy Chemical.

Stewart was a coach and supporter of participants and families in both Mims Park Baseball (Cottage Hill Little League) and Mims Park Redskins football where he participated in park maintenance, fundraising, and coaching for more than 16 years. Most days, if he wasn’t coaching, he could be found taking care of the field or applying his trade as an electrician to various areas throughout the park’s facilities. As his children grew older, this Vigor Wolf soon found himself as an avid supporter of the Mighty Murphy Panther Baseball and athletic program.

An avid sportsman and competitor, Stu enjoyed golfing, deep-sea fishing, deer-hunting, duck-hunting, baseball, and most of all — driving and competing as a stock-car driver at some of the Southeast’s most competitive short tracks. As per his driving career, Stewart was recently informed that he will be inducted into the Alabama Auto Racing Pioneers 2019 Hall of Fame Class at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega Superspeedway on January 11, 2020. Upon learning of this recognition, this as much as anything, drove Stu’s competitive spirit to continue his fight.

Much like many others across the country, he loved to gather on Saturdays to watch and cheer on the Alabama Crimson Tide, and on Sunday’s he joined the “Who Dat” Nation to cheer on the New Orleans Saints.

Stewart was never at a loss when it came time to voice his opinion or offer a humorous comment. He truly was the toughest, most stubborn, hard-headed, well-loved, and respected, character. A man of strong will and determination that could soften an entire room of serious physicians and staff, while simultaneously making his family blush — he was one-of-a-kind, and he will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. Nicole Angel, Dr. James Galle, and the nursing staff at Southern Cancer Center, and Dr. Chad Alford for their unrelenting work, study, and efforts on his behalf. A special thank you to Leslie Nelson, his home health RN, and RN’s Kathleen, Ellis, Sam, Shay, Ms. Kinney, Julia, and Amy for their wonderful care, support, and most importantly — attention to detail and general concern. Additional thanks to the men and women of the Lillian Volunteer Fire Department and Paramedics.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Radney Funeral Home located at 3155 Dauphin St., Mobile, Ala. 36606.

A short visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019. Funeral services will follow promptly at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019 at Radney Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery located at 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy, Mobile, Ala., 36605.
