Paul Ray Wingard, 91, born May 22, 1929 in River Falls, Alabama, passed away on June 3, 2020 at the USA Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama. Paul, affectionately known as Paul Ray by his siblings, he was preceded in death by his parents Paul Jones and Ola Lee Athey Wingard; his son, James Oliver Wingard; and the mother of his children, Betty Ruth Horn Wingard.
Paul was survived by his sons Paul, Dale and Barry Wingard and daughter Rhonda Overton; brothers, Carl, Don, Tom and Frank Wingard and sisters, Sarah Thomas, Mary Alice Langham, Virginia Bennett, Carolyn Beasley and Connie Peavy. Paul was blessed with 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. also, survived by other relatives and friends.
Son of a sharecropper, Paul grew up on a farm before serving in the US Army during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient. Paul started his family living on a farm and later began a professional career as an electrician in addition to being a surveyor for an engineering firm. An accomplished woodworker and artist, Paul’s hobbies included building furniture, painting landscapes, playing the saxophone and ball-room dancing. As a devout Christian Paul’s greatest enjoyment came from a lifetime of reading the Bible, attending church and spending time with his family and friends.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00a.m. from Jubilee Baptist Church, 9264 Pleasant Road, Daphne, Alabama.
Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in the church with Dr. Paul Matthews officiating.
Interment in Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be held privately.
