Newell Jackson “Jack” Byrd, Jr. - a lifelong resident of Mobile, Al, Jack, 81 years old, went to be with the Lord at Springhill Memorial Hospital early Friday morning. He was a 1960 graduate of Murphy High School. While attending high school he worked at Byrd’s Rollerdrome. After graduation, he worked for Keith A/C for 13 years before becoming a master electrician at L&N Railroad, retiring from CSX Railroad after numerous years. He was a member of the IBEW for many years.
Jack was a charter member of Manor Baptist Church and was still an active member until his death serving as a deacon, treasurer, and in many other capacities. He was the longest standing member of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Posse being active from 1970-2016 and still served as treasurer to date.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Newell and Wilodean Byrd. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jean Byrd; one brother Jerry (Jane) Byrd; three children Portia (Marty) Dooley, Newell Jackson Byrd III “Buddy”, and Penny Byrd; two step children Darrell (Donna) McDaniel and Pam (Frank) Spain; 13 grandchildren Kristin Dawson, Steffan McDaniel, Katie (Brandon) Dunnam, Ansley (A.J.) Bell, Jordan (Candis) Smith, Dylan Byrd, Bo Boswell, Noah Dooley, Cameron Spain, Newell “Jackson” Byrd IV, Maurin Dooley, Lance Spain, and Sierra Byrd; 6 great grandchildren Cole Smith, Jack “Little Jack” Dawson, Molleigh Dawson, Trinity Smith, Addie Bell, and Benny Dunnam.
Funeral services will be held from Manor Baptist Church on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery on Dauphin Island Parkway. Active Pallbearers will be Steffan McDaniel, Jordan Smith, Dylan Byrd, Bo Boswell, Noah Dooley, Cameron Spain, Jackson Byrd, and Lance Spain with Jack Dawson, Benny Dunnam, Todd Hodge, and Roger Tew serving as honorary pallbearers.
