her husband, Dr. Ernest G. DeBakey. She is survived by her sister, Melba Lauder Hamburg, her
niece, Leigh Anne Fleming (Charles), great-niece, Ava Elaine Fleming, great-nephew, Charles
Jackson Fleming, III, and countless other family and friends.
Mrs. DeBakey graduated from Foley High School, obtained her nursing degree from the University
of South Alabama, and spent her professional career as a registered nurse.
In addition to her family and career, Mrs. DeBakey devoted her time to philanthropic and civic
endeavors in the community. Continuing the vision of her husband, Mrs. DeBakey served as
President of the Ernest G. DeBakey Charitable Foundation, which was established to benefit
medical research, education, and the general health and well-being needs of the community.
Under her leadership, the Ernest G. DeBakey Charitable Foundation sponsored the DeBakey
Virtual Surgery Center at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. The DeBakey Drug
Education Vehicle, designed to educate students about the dangers of drug, tobacco, and alcohol
abuse, has serviced Mobile, Baldwin, and surrounding counties for over twenty years and is
another beloved achievement of Mrs. DeBakey and the Ernest G. DeBakey Charitable Foundation.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, staff, and caregivers at the Mobile Infirmary
and Saad Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Ernest G. DeBakey Charitable
Foundation, P.O. Box 31, St. Elmo, Alabama 36568.
