Lucy Moore Gafford passed away peacefully at her home from multiple myeloma on July 19th 2021 at the age of 87 years. She was born 12/16/33 in Camden, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph M. Moore and Marjorie N. Moore, her brother Joseph M. Moore Jr, her sister Martha Moore, and her son John P. Gafford. As a young girl she loved horses and rode them in many horse shows. She studied piano at an early age and became an accomplished pianist, playing with emotion and beauty. She graduated from Camden High School, where she was a cheerleader, band member, and salutatorian for her class.
Between her Junior and Senior years of high school Lucy took college level piano and English courses at Troy State while her mother was there obtaining an advanced teaching degree. While there, she met the love of her life, Bill Gafford. Bill was attending Troy State on a baseball scholarship but was helping the tennis coach out with lessons when he met Lucy on the tennis courts.
Lucy attended Auburn University for one year and majored in music while Bill worked on his masters degree there. She was a member of ADPi sorority.
Lucy and Bill were married on June 19th, 1954 and enjoyed over 67 wonderful years of marriage. Bill attended the UAB School of Dentistry and Lucy worked as a secretary to help get Bill through dental school. After dental school Bill served 2 years in the U.S.A.F. in Warner Robbins, Ga, and during that time Lucy gave birth to 2 sons, William Jr and John. Bill opened a dental practice in Saraland, AL in 1961, and Lucy gave birth to their third son, Tom. They moved to Mobile, AL in 1969 and joined Springhill Baptist church, where Lucy played organ for the early service and piano for the late service. She loved serving as a member of the outstanding choir at Springhill Baptist church and she played piano for various children’s choirs and soloists for decades.
Lucy was a beautiful Christian lady both inside and out. She was a member of the Springhill Garden Club for years and enjoyed working with flowers and plants. Lucy loved family get-togethers, camping and time spent at their beach home on Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores. She enjoyed playing tennis, golf and bridge. She loved reading books and never missed working daily crossword puzzles from the newspapers. She is survived by her husband William L. Gafford, Sr, sons William L. Gafford, Jr (Laura) and Thomas M. Gafford (Theresa), daughter-in-law Leslie Gafford, 9 loving grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Dorothy D. Moore. Her family and friends will miss her warm smile, her kind heart and her sweet disposition, but rejoice in the fact that she is in heaven and that we will one day see her again.
The family will receive visitors 7/28/21 at 12:00 pm at Springhill Baptist Church with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 pm. The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Lucy’s name to the American Cancer Society or Springhill Baptist Church.
