Linda Sue Sparkman, 81, passed away at her home in Mobile, AL on Monday, May 20, 2019. Linda was born in Decatur, AL on May 7, 1938. She earned her Baccalaureate degree from Montevallo and received her Master’s degree from Alabama College. Linda moved to Mobile in 1960, were she was a Physical Education teacher and a coach of volleyball, tennis, and cheerleading for Murphy High School, as well as sponsoring Student Council. Throughout her 34-year career at Murphy, Linda advanced to Assistant Principal, and eventually Principal, where she introduced the Baccalaureate Program to Murphy High School. She was granted the Lifetime Achievement Award by Murphy in 2011, for all of her contributions to the school. After leaving Murphy, Linda went on to work for the Federal “Title One” program as a resource teacher for nearly a decade. She was a diehard Murphy football fan and Alabama football fan – and loved to do crossword puzzles. In Linda’s younger years, she was an avid golfer and tennis player, and later played on a bowling league with her friends. Linda was an incredible woman, was loved, and will be greatly missed.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Hudie M. Brown and Dorothy Brown; and one brother, Donald Wayne Sparkman.
She is survived by her brother, David Brown; sister, Karen Clarke; nephew, Bryndon Clarke; nieces, Kaitlyn and Sarah Clarke; bestfriends, Jamie Lovitte, Serena Wilcox, Billie Jewel Posey, and Patsy Smith; as well as a host of cousins and other cherished family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, with a funeral service in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the “Journalism” or “Educational Administration Scholarship Fund” through the Murphy High School Alumni Association.
