Katherine Glenn Collins deGruy died peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2020, in Mobile, Alabama. She was 92 years old. She was born on October 20, 1927, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Neal Glenn and Katherine Barfield Collins. She attended Mary Washington College and the University of Alabama, where she met and married Frank deGruy, Jr., on August 16, 1947. She worked for many years at the Providence Hospital School of Nursing as the assistant director. She had a heart for service, and volunteered as a teacher at the Crichton Kindergarten, as a vacation bible school teacher at the First Baptist Church of Mobile, as the chair of the board at the Florence Crittenton Home, as the president of the Springhill Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and as the president of the Mobile Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge. She sang in Carnegie Hall as a member of the choir at the First Baptist Church. For the past twelve years she has been an active member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church.
Katherine deGruy was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Verloin deGruy, Jr., and her son, Michael deGruy (Mary).
She is survived by her brother Monty Collins, and three of her four beloved sons—Frank deGruy III (Geri), Glenn deGruy (Margaret), and Kenneth deGruy (Chris). She is also survived by ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter, as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and an enormous coterie of friends.
A memorial visitation for Katherine will be held Thursday, January 9, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Spring Hill Baptist Church, 2 S McGregor Ave, Mobile, Alabama 36608, followed by a celebration of life at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Spring Hill Baptist Church.
