Jean Murray O’Neill, a native Mobilian and lifelong resident of Mobile, died peacefully in her home on May 30, 2020. She is the daughter of John Tobin Murray and Apollonia Horst Manson Murray and was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, John Carroll (Stump) O’Neill, Jr. She is also preceded in death by her loving parents, two brothers, John Tobin Murray, Jr. and Robert Sands Murray and two sisters, Ann Murray Meador and Appie Murray Sharp.
Mrs. O’Neill attended the Covent of Mercy and graduated from the Visitation Academy, a Catholic school in Mobile run by the Visitation Sisters from Washington, D.C. She then attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. She returned to Mobile to live a beautiful, happy and blessed life.
Jean and Stump enjoyed many summers with family and friends at the Murray Bay House on Mobile Bay, swimming, sailing, crabbing and fishing! An active member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church, she served as President of the Alter Society and was a devoted member of Daughters of Mary. Jean was a member of various mystic societies and had sewing circle of dear friends.
She is survived by her daughters-Appie O’Neill Head (Jeff), Jean O’Neill Downing (Royer), Elizabeth O’Neill Stone (Chip), Kathleen Murray O’Neill and Carroll O’Neill Broom (Kent); 12 grandchildren-Appie Head McMurphy(Steadman), Jack Head (Megan), Hannah Stone Noonan (Campbell), Gregory Stone, Kathleen Stone, Rachel Downing, Royer Downing, Alec Parliament, Michael Parliament, Blakley Broom, Taylor Broom and Kendall Broom; and 4 great-grandchildren-Appie, Perry and Lanier McMurphy and Katherine Noonan. She is also survived by one brother, James Manson Murray.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, a private family only graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Visitation Monastery and American Cancer Society.
