James John Merig, Jr., D.M.D. – A native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died Saturday, October 30, 2010, at a local health care facility. Dr. Merig graduated from McGill Institute in 1955, earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Spring Hill College in 1959 and his graduate degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham in 1967. His professional career in oral and maxillofacial surgery includes almost 30 years of private practice. A Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Merig is a member of Omicrom Kappa Upsilon and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was a proud member of the McGill Toolen Sports Hall of Fame, two mystic societies, and served as president of the Alabama Dental Board of Examiners from 1984 through 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents, James John Merig, Sr. and Fannie Catherine Black Merig. Survivors include his beloved Mary Jane; three sons, Dr. Michael John Merig and his wife, Beverly of St. Louis, MO, Jeremy Jordan Martin and his wife, Sara of Mobile and Dr. Jason Brantley Martin and his wife, Dr. Jennifer Martin of Ft. Thomas, KY; eight grandchildren, Jack, Nick, Kate, Anna Faith, Jordan, Lillie, Ansley, and Sophia; other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Corpus Christi Catholic Church on Friday, November 5, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.
