George J. Waldron III…age 79 passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021. Mr. Waldron was born in the Panama Canal Zone and moved to Mobile, AL when he was nine (9) years of age. He was the son of Mae Swanson Waldron and George J. Waldron, Jr. He was married to his very best friend, Joan Hughes Waldron, for 56 years.
Mr. Waldron retired after 32 years of service from Delchamps Inc., as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations, a regional chain of 121 supermarkets in four Gulf Coast states. He also was President of GJW Enterprises, Inc. DBA as Quiznos Subs for 14 years with 38 franchises under his tutelage.
Mr. Waldron was active throughout his professional life and numerous community and civic activities such as March of Dimes, Arthritis Foundation, United Way, Senior Bowl, American Cancer Society, Past President of the Mobile Advertising Club, and served as Governor of the 7th Deep South Advertising Federation, Historian as well as Eastern Regional Chairman (2 years) of the National Advertising Federation. He served on the Board of Directors of Old Dauphin Way School known presently as the AIP program at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, Ronald McDonald House of Mobile as well as the Americas Junior Miss Program later called Distinguished Young Women of America. Mr. Waldron served for 14 years on the Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board as well as Board member of the Dauphin Island Inn Condo Association. He was a member of three (3) Mystic societies. Mr. Waldron was a member of Ashland Place United Methodist Church.
Mr. Waldron graduated from Murphy High School in 1960 and was inducted into Murphy’s Hall of Fame in 2020. He attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL, graduated from Livingston State College (now, University of West Alabama) and completed post-graduate work at the University of South Alabama.
He was predeceased by his mother, Mae Swanson Waldron; father, George J. Waldron, Jr; and his brother, Joel Michael Waldron. He is survived by his wife, Joan Hughes Waldron; his son, Brent Hughes Waldron (Tara), Mobile, AL; his daughter Kristy Waldron, Mobile, AL; three dearly loved grandchildren: Blake Hughes Waldron, Julia Cole Dugan, and Bryson Hayes Thistrup, all of Mobile, AL; his sister, Sharon Waldron Padgett (Bill), Stockton, AL; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of the most wonderful friends and other family members one could ask for.
The family will receive friends at Ashland Place United Methodist Church between 10:00 and 11:00 in the Fellowship Hall on Friday, October 1, 2021 with a funeral service at 11:00 in the sanctuary of the church. Burial will be at 12:30 at Pine Crest Cemetery of Dauphin Island Parkway.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Ashland Place United Methodist Church, Ronald McDonald House of Mobile and Distinguished Young Women of America Scholarship Fund, or to your favorite charity.
The Family gives special thanks to Deborah Carey and Tony Smith of “Touched by an Angel”, who were dedicated sitters who took excellent care of George in his final days. The family also extends special thanks to Hazel Nicholson of Z-Trip who provided accessible transportation in our time of dire need.
