Born – October 27, 1942 in Columbus, GA, Died – November 29,2024 in Mobile, AL after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Graduated from Columbus High School and Auburn University with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He married Cecelia Noell Ledbetter, his high school sweetheart, and they have 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren, and 6 great granddaughters.
During his career in water treatment sales he worked for the two prominent water treatment companies in the US, Betz Laboratories and Nalco Chemical Company, earning every major sales award possible from both companies. He retired from Nalco in 1998. He has been a resident of Mobile since his retirement, and he and his wife Celia have been faithful members of both Government Street Presbyterian Church and currently Springhill Presbyterian Church. In his life there were three great loves: his God, his family and Auburn University.
Steve devoted time to his church as an active Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church USA. After retirement he worked through Government Street Presbyterian Church and with the Homeless Coalition to bring the Interfatih Hospitality Network, now Family Promise, to the Mobile area. He served on the board for many years and Family Promise is still operational today.
In the mid-1980’s Steve worked with the administration of Auburn University to help form the Pulp and Paper Foundation which provides scholarships and support for engineering students who desire a career in the Pulp and Paper industry. He was Executive Director for 13 years, and the Foundation has since its’ inception has raised millions of dollars for scholarships.
Steve was the “go to” person in his family. He was known for giving advice as well as his help. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
Steve is preceded in death by his father, George Hanks Ledbetter, his mother, Mary Ellen Stephens Ledbetter, his brother, James David Ledbetter, and a sister, Judith Ledbetter Greenholtz. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Cecelia Noell Ledbetter, Daughters: Donna Ledbetter Pate (Alan), Debra Ledbetter Luyk (Adrian), Amy Ledbetter Murphy (John), Grandchildren: Tyler Pate (Heidi), Kyle Pate (Melissa), Julia Luyk, Ellery Luyk, Catherine Murphy Glaser (Michael), John S. Murphy (Allie), Elizabeth Murphy Cook (Parker), and 6 Great Granddaughters, and Sisters: Nancy Ledbetter McFall, Sally Ledbetter Haywood , Sister in Law: Martha Mallory Ledbetter, and many nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life Service: Springhill Presbyterian Church, Monday December 9th, 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Springhill Presbyterian Church’s Music program, or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
