Edwina Jones was born on February 6, 1929, in Mobile, Alabama, and passed away on April 13, 2023, at home in Theodore, Alabama. Her parents, Laura Goodman Simpson and Eddie Jones preceded her in death.She married the love of her life, Mose J. Johnson in Mobile, Alabama on December 27, 1969. She was devoted to her husband for 29 years, who preceded her into Eternal life.
She accepted Christ at a young age and became a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama until 1973, she then transferred her membership to Theodore First United Methodist Church where she held various leadership positions at different levels.
Edwina was a nursing instructor who broke barriers. She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1946 and continued her education by being part of the first African American graduating class of the licensed practical nurse (LPN) program in 1955 in Mobile, Alabama. She also became the first African American to be employed in the nursing department at Southwestern State Technical College (now known as Bishop State Community College) in 1968 and later earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree from William Carey College In Hattiesburg, MS in 1981. Edwina dedicated her career to educating future nurses at Southwestern State Technical until her retirement in 1993.
She had a fulfilling retirement with meaningful activities such as spending time at church, visiting family, volunteering, and traveling. She also enjoyed reading and sharing books with students at Burroughs Elementary School and stayed involved in the community through various organizations such as Smalls Mortuary, Mobile Baykeeper, Red Cross, and Theodore Community Citizens Club. Her passing is mourned by those who knew and loved her.
Edwina was known for her desire to nurture the human spirit, generously offering her time and wisdom to those who interacted with her.
She is survived by her siblings James V. Seals, Albert Jones, and Charity Slaughter, as well as several Godchildren, cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives, nursing students, and friends.
The family will receive friends at Pine Crest Funeral Home, 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy. on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church on Saturday, May 6, 2023 beginning at 12:00 noon. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy., Mobile, AL immediately following.
