Doris Gerrard Clay - Passed into Heaven on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at the age of 96. She was a native of Bentonia, MS and a long time resident of Mobile. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Henry D. Clay; and her daughter, Shirley Clay. She is survived by two sons, Calvin Clay (Mary Jean) and Gerrard Clay; and her daughter, Doris Clay Lanham, all of Mobile. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Carter Clay (Heather), and Marshall Clay of Birmingham, Kristi Carmichael (James) of Memphis, Terri Thompson (Dan) of Minneapolis, Ben Lanham (Katherine) of Atlanta, and Clay Lanham (Mandy) of Mobile; and eight great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women. She taught school and later worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 25 years. She was a long time and dedicated member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, faithful in her Sunday School class and the Wednesday morning ladies prayer group for over 40 years. She lived a life of service to others; first to her Lord, her family, her church, and her community. She served as a Stephen Minister, worked at the Society of St. Stephen and delivered Meals on Wheels for her church. She also answered phones at Mobile Helpline. She was most devoted to her family and surrounded them with love and prayers. A memorial service will be held from Dauphin Way United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 16, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. The family will greet visitors following the service.
