Robert (Rob) Alan Axel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and accomplished pilot, passed away on Saturday, May 13th, 2023, at the age of 72 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Born on March 8th, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio, Robert was the son of Ruth and Arnold Axel (deceased). He is survived by his older brother, Marty and younger brother, Michael Axel.
After graduating from Beachwood High School, Rob attended Kent State University, where he earned a degree in psychology. However, his true calling was the sky. With unwavering determination,he earned his pilot licenses and pursued his dream of flying commercial airplanes. For three remarkable decades, Rob flew as a commercial pilot for American Airlines. In December 1987, he achieved the distinguished rank of Captain. Rob's career was a testament to his unwavering dedication and love of flying. He retired from American Airlines in 2008.
Outside of the cockpit, Rob was an ardent builder and creator. He possessed a unique talent for restoring classic corvettes and mustangs, breathing new life into these iconic automobiles. Additionally, he found joy in housing projects, undertaking various construction endeavors throughout his life and fixing just about anything without the need for instructions. At the age of 35, Rob accomplished a remarkable milestone by constructing his very first home in Barrington, Illinois. His skillful hands and relentless determination to make anything perfect were evident in every project he undertook, no matter how big or small.
Beyond his professional achievements, Rob's greatest source of pride and happiness was his family. He shared an incredible 51-year journey of love and companionship with his devoted wife, Mindy. Their union was a testament to their commitment to one another through the joys and challenges of life. Rob was a loving father to his daughter Jessica and son Ross, providing unwavering support and guidance throughout their lives. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he cherished the time spent with them, creating treasured memories that will be forever remembered.
Rob will be remembered as a man of talent, his attention to detail, creativeness and dedication to his passions. His commitment to his family, his love for flying, and his talent for building will forever inspire those whose lives he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience and determination, that will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rob will forever remain in our hearts, and his memory will be cherished by his loved ones. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A celebration of Rob's life will be held on June 3, 2023 at 1-pm PST, at the Fairhaven Funeral Home, Mission Viejo, reception to follow.
