Irma attended Brewster School and was a graduate of Edinburg High School. She worked as a secretary for Scott Foresman Book Publishing, in New Jersey, Human Resources, Edinburg High School and Rio Home Care, but was most remembered for her singing career that began when she was just 8 years old. Many of the songs she recorded in her early career were written by Estella P. Lane. One song, Especialmente Para Ti, recorded by Ideal Records, became an instant hit. She was a regular on the Moulton “Ty” Cobb Show in the 1950’s. Irma recorded a Christmas album when she was 15 years old that was very popular and included such classics as Pancho Claus and Donde Esta Santa Claus. Irma traveled with Angel Infante of Falcon Records on tour and sang with Amalia Mendoza, a well-known Mexican singer and actress. The highlight of her career was her appearance on the nationally televised Lawrence Welk Show. Irma recorded over 40 records and 2 albums. But she will be remembered not only for the way she entertained us with her singing, but also for the way she entertained us with her jokes and the laughter she brought to the table.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents, Arturo and Leocadita (Casas) Garza, her sister, Imelda Gomez and her brother, Gerardo (Jerry) Garza. She is survived by her daughter, Monica Olivarez, two grandchildren, Joel Olivarez and Andrea Trieber and one great grandchild, Ethan Trieber, as well as her brothers, Arturo and Frank Garza and sisters, Margaret Rodriguez and Veronica Garza and many nieces and nephews.
When you think of Irma, celebrate the good memories you have of her. She left us with numerous moments to cherish for the rest of our lives.
