She was born Marlene Moot February 15, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Sadie and Louie Moot, both of whom had immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe as young children. Marlene was homemaker Sadie’s and plumber Louie’s second child. They were already parents to 7-year-old Vivian at the time.
By 1940 the family was living on East 135th Street in Cleveland, and when
Marlene was 7, her sister Francine arrived.
Growing up in Cleveland, Marlene attended John Adams High School, from which she graduated in 1952.
After high school she worked as a secretary at the Blaushild Plymouth car dealership. She found out after she left that they replaced her with 3 people.
She met Sandy Davis on a blind date, and they married about a year later on September 11, 1954.
Sandy, an electrical engineer, and Marlene moved to Southern California and daughter Teri was born in 1957. About six months later, Marlene was so homesick, the young family moved back to Cleveland. Son Jeff was born there in 1960, and not long after, the family returned to Southern California’s San Fernando Valley.
In 1961 they bought a brand new house in Woodland Hills, and daughter Dana came along five years later. Marlene raised the 3 children as a stay-at-home mom while Sandy worked in the aerospace industry as an engineer before becoming a PR and marketing writer and editor.
Marlene welcomed all the neighborhood kids to her home, and the Mariano Street house was THE place for Teri’s, Jeff’s, and Dana’s friends to hang out, swim, and play.
As the kids grew up, Marlene returned to the workforce and got a job at Prudential Insurance.
She loved to go on cruises with Sandy and her sisters and brothers-in-law. They traveled the world together, visiting Europe, the Caribbean, and North Africa. Marlene and Sandy also traveled to Japan, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, and Greece as well as to various U.S. cities (including Marlene’s favorite weekend getaway—Las Vegas), and some National Parks.
Marlene also hosted nearly all the big family gatherings and put on the best birthday parties for her children and even some of her grandchildren. (She LOVED a good party.) No matter the occasion, there was always way too much good food and most guests walked out the door with leftovers.
She was the kindest, sweetest, most empathetic person you’d ever meet and she will be greatly missed by Sandy, her beloved husband of nearly 70 years; children Teri Greenberg and husband Jeff, Jeff Davis and wife Laurie, and Dana Lentz and husband Jeff; grandchildren Jamie, Shane, Paige, Zach, Nick, Tyler, Matt, and Jenna; great-grandchildren Logan, Lauren, Dallas, Aria, and Elena; sisters Vivian Hirsch and husband Harold and Francine Murray and husband Warren; and her niece, nephews, cousins, friends, and her children’s friends.
A funeral and graveside service for Marlene will be held Sunday, December 10, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Groman Eden Mortuary, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, CA 91345.
