Dan was born on July 10, 1962 in Vancouver, BC to parents Ken Straker and Noreen Straker (nee Thornton) and grew up in Burnaby where he played hockey, rode dirt bikes and met many of his lifelong friends. Dan was a proud tradesman who achieved certification as a Journeyman Fabricator and Welder. His work took him throughout BC and Alberta for most of his career including Vancouver Island where he spent a lot of time with his aunt and uncle Bob and Audrey Stewart in Comox. Most recently, he worked closer to home, at Western Scale in Port Coquitlam.
Deeply loved by many, Dan is survived by his mother Noreen Straker, sisters Jackie Jacob (Scott) and Michele McGowan, niece Haylee McGowan (Tim), nephew Jesse McGowan (Dani), brother Bradley, and many aunts, uncles and cousins in BC and Alberta. Dan is predeceased by his grandmother Madeleine Thornton, cousin Aaron Stewart, aunt Pauline Thornton, and father Ken Straker (Kathie).
Dan was incredibly hard-working and always took the time to help others. His large group of friends, gathered over a lifetime of good living, are a testament to his kind, thoughtful and caring nature. He took great joy in connecting with friends and family to wrench on cars, ride the trails on his mountain bike or atv, race at the Agassiz Speedway in the Honda Mini Series, finetune his culinary skills, discover new IPAs, work on his home and garden or simply pop up his garage door and hang with neighbours.
Special thanks to the healthcare team that supported Dan throughout his journey including Dr Suo, Dr Tan, Dr Rathod, Dr Barwich, the nurses, care aides, home health team and the incredible team led by Jane at Christine Morrison Hospice.
Dan’s final “safety meeting” ie Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024 from 1pm – 4pm at the Steelhead Community Hall located at 32972 Cardinal St, Mission, BC.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mission Hospice Society or BC Cancer Foundation in Dan’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
