Charlotte – Sandra Kay Brown Owens, 71, of Charlotte, died at 12:45 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at her home wrapped in the love of her family. A woman of faith, wisdom and boundless curiosity, Sandra leaves behind many who will forever cherish her memory.
Born October 26, 1946, in Statesville, NC, to Gilbert Gordon Brown and Margie Mae Walker, Sandra was preceded in death by her parents as well as her ex-husband, Norman Pressley Owens.
Sandra leaves to carry on the very best of her qualities, an adoring family including a daughter, Noel Owens (and Tracey) Hill of Concord, NC and a son, N. Todd Owens (and ex-wife Kimberly) of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Blaine and Emily Hill, and Greyson, Hayden and Cooper Owens; a beloved sister, Judy Brown of Concord, NC; a step-father, Joe (and Daisy) Hollars of Blowing Rock and a world of devoted neighbors, friends, and co-workers.
Sandra attended Statesville High School, earned a G.E.D. and graduated unto the world where she continued to be a voracious reader and a lifelong learner. Sandra was graced with a sharp intellect and the rare ability to see many sides of issues without closing her mind. She accepted people as she found them and never asserted her beliefs in a way that demeaned or diminished another person. A denizen of multiple churches of varied denominations, Sandra had a curious mind, an open heart and was always ready for a philosophical or theological debate.
Sandra was so “tactile” so as to occasionally play with her food, and loquacious to a fault, Sandra talked incessantly during movies, meals and long car rides –to the bemusement of her children and grandchildren. A woman of endless complexity, she was a devoted animal lover but could kill a snake with a hoe without batting an eye when it threatened her grand-babies; a lover of many Jeffersons --- Thomas, George and Davis, she could expound upon the virtues of each one without taking a breath; a talented cook, gardener, shag dancer, and a talented hair stylist by trade. She was the giver of the very best “first haircuts” to grand-babies and “up-dos” to the prom and wedding bound. She was a woman of strong faith and many talents who shared herself with all who knew her.
A visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the McEwen-Mint Hill Funeral Home on Sunday, January 28, 2018. A celebration of Sandra’s life will follow immediately thereafter in the chapel with Pastor Lee Canipe officiating. A private graveside interment will occur at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro where Sandra will join her family in eternal rest.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made either to St. Jude’s Hospital, WFAE, WDAV, or UNC TV.
Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mcewenminthillchapel.com.
