James Henry Owen, Jr. (Jim), 79, of Matthews, NC, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 12, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born in Salisbury, NC on March 17, 1938 to James Henry Owen, Sr. and Carrie Burns Abernathy. Known by his family and friends as a gentle, humble servant of the Lord, Jim was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend.
Jim attended Boyden High School and served proudly in the U.S. Air Force for 6 years. He cherished his 55 years of marriage to Joan Whisnant Owen, his long-time sweetheart and best friend. Jim had a sales career in the corrugated box industry and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a Deacon and Usher. He was also a member of Matthews Masonic Lodge #461, Oasis Shriners, and the Scottish Rite. Among his favorite activities were golfing, fishing, watching sports events, and spending time with his family, especially on their annual summer beach trips.
Jim is survived by his wife Joan; son James Scott Owen of Newport Beach, CA; daughter Dawn Carol Owen of Charlotte; sisters Phyllis Peeler (Paul) of Rockwell and Tricia Neer (Fred) of Bonita Springs, FL; and brother Tony Owen of Cary.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 7200 E WT Harris Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28215 with a funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m.
Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill, NC.
