Debritu Bayu was born on January 26, 1935, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Bayu Woldekidan and Beletshachew Habtegabriel. The youngest of five siblings, she grew up surrounded by love and close family bonds. A devoted mother of seven, grandmother of thirteen, and great-grandmother of seven, Debritu's legacy is deeply rooted in the lives she nurtured and the family she cherished.
As a skilled midwife, she brought over 100 new lives into the world, including her own sister's children—a testament to her compassion and dedication to caring for others. Her remarkable contributions will be remembered by all who were fortunate to know her.
On November 12, 2024, Debritu Bayu, surrounded by love and the legacy she built, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior after a full and blessed life.
Debritu was a wellspring of wisdom, known by many for her comforting presence and her ability to offer solace to those who were grieving. If she were here today, she would say: “We cannot fight with God, for we are His property. When He comes to collect us, the only thing He asks of us is to offer Him praise—and that costs us nothing.”
Debritu is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Genet, and grandson, Dawit.
She is survived by her cherished children: Eleni, Saba, Getachew, Yohannes, Tsehai and Mesfin;
her grandchildren: Meron, Eden, Nadew, Benjamin, Nahom, Bitanya, Brook, Robel, Dina, Nardos, Natty, Simon, Gideon;
and her great-grandchildren: Ananyia, Solyana, Markon, Abem, Micah, Gabriel, and Dawit.
She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved her deeply and will forever hold her in their hearts.
