Frank was born in Huntington, New York on April 20, 1944. He graduated from Huntington High School as a three-sport varsity athlete in baseball, wrestling and football. He continued on to join the U.S. Navy in 1961 where he served on active duty as a Yeoman for seven years. He then transitioned into the U.S. Air Force where he continued to serve on active duty until he transitioned into the Air National Guard in 1972. He served in the Air National Guard in both a reserve and active status. Most recently he served as the Air Operations Supervisor until he retired in 1996 as a Senior Master Sergeant, the second highest enlisted rank within the Air National Guard. Concurrently, he worked as an Air Traffic Controller at the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center, controlling most of the air traffic in and out of the New York Metropolitan area, until he retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2010.
Frank was extremely accomplished in his fields of work, but most of all he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and was soon to be a great-grandfather. There was nothing Frank loved more than his family. Frank is survived by his wife Diane, whom he was married to for 57 years, his two daughters, Pamela and Jacqueline and his son, Francis Junior, “Patrick.” He was a loving father-in-law to Richard, Andy and Kristi. He was a cherished grandfather to Danielle, Nick, Brooke, Brandon, Haley, Connor, Tyler, Madison and Julia. He was an admired uncle to his many nieces and nephews. And, he was a loyal and prized friend to all.
Frank loved many things in his life. He loved traveling the world with his wife Diane, he loved sailing and being out on the water, he loved playing a round of golf, he loved to sit by a roaring fire, he loved his Irish heritage and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, and he loved to raise his glass to toast to family and friends. Above all, he loved being surrounded by the ones he loved.
The funeral service will be held on January 30th at 10 a.m. at St. Louis de Montfort. Burial will follow the funeral at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Port Jefferson immediately following.
The family of Frank Murphy will be holding a celebration of Frank’s extraordinary life to be scheduled at a later date due to current COVID-19 restrictions.
“May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.” – Irish Blessing
