Colleen Scully, beloved daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on July 9, 2024, at the age of 53.
Born on August 14, 1970, in Port Jefferson, New York to parents Mary “Lynn” and Denis Scully. Colleen grew up with her three brothers Paul, Peter, and Patrick Scully in Miller Place where she chose to stay throughout her life to be close to friends, family, and the town she loved.
Colleen graduated from Miller Place High School in 1988, where her experiences in drama club and stage crew shaped her love of storytelling and the arts. She was never more content than getting lost in music, movies and anime as well as time spent with friends and family. We're not supposed to choose favorites, but if pressed, her Maine Coon cat Butterball "Bubba" may have been her most beloved in her family of felines. She also saw her community as extended family and could be found winning at trivia nights with friends, attending the Mount Sinai Yacht Club alongside her mother, and church at St. Louis de Montfort.
She gave the same warmth and dedication to her community as she did to her colleagues at Stony Brook University where she worked for 33 years. In that time she became a university pillar and exhibited a tireless work ethic that was admired by all who had the pleasure to work alongside her.
Colleen has always had unwavering devotion to her family, especially her mother who she cared for and fought side by side with in the face of Mary Lynn's struggle with anemia. Colleen was still grieving the loss of her mother when she received her cancer diagnosis only a few short months ago. She faced this hardship with courage, grace, and the support of her friends and family. Despite the toll of her diagnosis, she remained dedicated to her work and was a light in the life of those who knew her.
Colleen will be deeply missed by her brothers: Paul, Peter (Linda), Patrick (Grace), as well as her nieces & nephew Annika, Kierra, and Jack, and numerous friends. She will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her work and the compassion she had for her family & friends.
A memorial service to honor Colleen’s life will be held at St. Louis de Montfort in Sound Beach, NY in the months to follow with a private cremation and interment at Cedar Hill cemetery in Port Jefferson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the STAR (Save the Animals Rescue Foundation) or Stony Brook Cancer Center, in Colleen’s memory.
