William Hunter

1918 – 2012

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend, William Simpson McVicars Hunter passed away surrounded by his loving family, January 31, 2012. He was born December 20, 1918 to his Scottish parents, William Simpson McVicars and Thornton Aitken Hunter in Kemmerer, Wyoming. He grew up in the mining camps around Kemmerer where he joined the LDS Church. After High School graduation, dad enlisted in the CCC’s (Civilian Conservation Corps). This, plus working for Kemmerer Coal Company, helped him fund his education at his beloved University of Utah. While attending the UofU he was a member of the Varsity Track Team lettering and specializing in the mile. He ran a 4 min 10 sec mile, and took first in a Conference meet in Denver. Before he graduated and while at the UofU, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and continued his education at the California Institute of Technology. He spent the remainder of World War II as a Meteorologist in Dutch Guiana. He also served in the Air Force Reserve and earned the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war, dad finished his schooling at the UofU and graduated in 1945 with a degree in Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. He worked as an Engineer in the mining industry at Industrial Physics and Electronics, Industrial Design and retiring at 78 after working for Roberts and Schaefer. He was well known for his expertise. Dad met his sweetheart, Lucille, while attending the University of Utah. They were married September 23, 1945, and enjoyed 67 years together. They were inseparable and dad took care of the love of his life the past several years. Dad and mom supported their 3 children through graduation from the UofU. They were always there for their family and are considered by many to be the BEST GRANDPARENTS ever. Family was VERY important to them and they served their family well. Dad was known by all for his incredible positive attitude, his unselfishness, a listening ear and love of people. He considered everyone a friend, loved birthdays and holidays and loved giving gifts. He was a strong supporter of all Veterans. Dad was a BIG FAN of University of Utah football and basketball games, always “A Utah Man…”. He loved to fly fish and fished most of the rivers in Wyoming. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Robert, Jimmy and Dean. He is survived by his wife, Lucille, daughter, Jeanette (Allan), Sons, Greg (Kris) and Doug (Julie - deceased), 10 wonderful grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. We love you dad!

William’s family invites you to celebrate his life Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 11:00 am at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Dr. A viewing will be held Tuesday night from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Wasatch Lawn and one hour prior to the service.
