Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Shirley Nilsson Brown, passed away peacefully February 8, 2016 surrounded by family members. She was born August 24, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Floyd C. and Alice Mantle Nilsson. She lived a live full of joy for ninety-three years. Shirley attended East High School and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Elementary Education. While at the University she met her soul mate and husband of 69 years, Wallace “Bud” Brown. They were sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple. Tennis always played an important role in her life: from winning the Salt Lake No Champs Tournament in her youth, playing weekly with dear neighbors to regularly attending the Indian Wells tournament with close friends.
Her husband and family were her number one priority. She did everything possible to insure the happiness of her family. She passed her joy for life and “sunshine” to all she met, sharing Christ like service in every facet of her life. This included devoted service as a Visiting Teacher, Relief Society President, Young Women’s Advisor, Sunday School Teacher, Primary Teacher and Hostess at the Church Office Building. Her students looked forward to her legendary graham cracker birthday cakes. Shirley and Bud served two LDS missions, one to the Salt Lake Liberty Stake and one to the St. George Visitor Center.
She will be deeply missed by her children: Patty “Darell”, John “Pat”, David “Lynette”, 14 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Each one knew that they were loved by their Grandma. She was preceeded in death by her husband “Bud” and her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to the LDS Church Missionary fund.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, February 15th at 11:00am at the Monument Park Stake Center located at 1320 South Wasatch Drive. A viewing will be held Sunday, February 14th from 6:00 to 7:30pm at the Monument Park Stake Center and one hour prior to the funeral service.
