Mary Ann Greaves Huefner, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend passed away on June 2, 2022 due to complications after heart surgery. Mary Ann was born on June 8, 1937 to Ora Geddes and Clara Farnes Greaves. She grew up in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, which she considered her private playground where she “took wonderful, imaginary trips while sitting on the backs of the stone lions.” She attended Lafayette and Washington Elementary schools, Horace Mann Jr. High, and West High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Utah where she was also a member of the Lambda Delta Sigma Sorority. She married David Smith Huefner on June 16, 1960 in the Salt Lake Temple and enjoyed 56 years together. They have 4 sons and 1 daughter.
She taught at Backman Elementary School until forced to leave in January of 1961 due to the upcoming birth of her first son. She returned to teaching part time by substituting in 1980, when her youngest child entered kindergarten, then began teaching 2nd grade full time at Bennion Elementary in 1986. After she retired, she helped her sister on many occasions in her kindergarten classroom at Nibley Park Elementary. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority for retired teachers, and enjoyed many trips to Laughlin, NV with them.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a Relief Society President, Primary President, Stake Primary President, and in many other callings. Her last calling, where she served for 14 years, was as a Gospel Doctrine Instructor. She also served with her husband in the Salt Lake Temple for many years.
Mary Ann was one of the first docents for the Church Museum of Art and during her time working there she wrote the script for their handcart puppet show, then worked the puppets while it was filmed.
She was a proud member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She was active with her husband in the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. She had a bookclub with friends and neighbors. She was a friend to all she came in contact with and did many kind acts for others. She loved and was loved by the people in her neighborhood, both past and present.
Mary Ann loved her family and was devoted to their happiness. She was exceptionally proud of every single member of her family and would talk about them at any opportunity. She was happy to connect with her friends and talk about her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, Richard, her sister Susan Greaves Dahl, and her daughter-in-law Graciela Dell’Orefice Huefner. She is survived by her five children, Jeffrey (Jane), Douglas (Kimberle), Richard (Hayley), Michael (Elsie), and Jana (David Ethington), as well as 21 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday June 8, 2022 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Parley’s 5th Ward, 2615 Stringham Avenue, Salt Lake City, and from 9:30 to 10:45 AM on Thursday, June 9, 2022, also at the Parley’s 5th Ward. The funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. (Enter from 33rd South)
