Our loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away on September 13, 2015 at the age of 57 after a valiant battle with brain cancer. He was born on May 24, 1958 to Olean Hess Manning and Ann Parkinson Manning in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Karen Koning on February 17, 1981 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the proud parents of five children.
Mark grew up in the Holladay area and attended Olympus High School, the University of Utah and Utah State. He faithfully served a mission for the LDS church in the Atlanta, Georgia Mission from 1977 to 1979.
Mark loved spending time with his family, his friends and especially his grandchildren. Exploring Yellowstone and boating at Lake Powell with his family were some of his favorite activities and where he made some of his fondest memories.
Mark cared deeply about the youth with whom he interacted throughout his life as a bishop, principal and teacher. As a leader, Mark felt that everyone’s success was paramount to his own. He provided direction to empower everyone to succeed. He truly felt that everyone was special, and he tried to let them know that and to help them reach their full potential. One of Mark’s most recognizable achievements was the recently constructed Olympus High School, where Mark’s influence will benefit students for many years. At the time of his passing, he was employed as the Director of High Schools in the Granite School District.
Mark served faithfully in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including bishop of the Holladay 2nd Ward. He was bishop and principal at the same time. The youth in the ward lovingly called him “Bishopal.”
Mark is survived by his wife, Karen; children: Nicholas (Charity), Crystal (Justin) VanAusdal, Karina (Eric) Phillips, Tyson (Sarah) and Brayden; Mother: Ann Manning, Mother-in-law: Carol Booth. Siblings: Cynthia Ritz, Chad (Jana), Patrice (Shannon) Ynchausti. Grandchildren: Wyatt, McKenzie, Cole, Emory, Deegan and Seth. Preceded in death by father, O Hess Manning, baby brother, Douglas and granddaughter, Addilyn Manning.
Funeral services will be held at the Olympus High School Performing Arts Center, 4055 South 2300 East on Saturday, September 19th at 11:00. A viewing will be held prior from 9:30 to 10:45, as well as on Friday, September 18th from 6:00 until 9:00 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Mortuary, 3401 S Highland Drive.
