Lois Hollstein passed away after a long happy life on February 11, 2018. Lois was born at home in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 13, 1925 to Joseph and Della Jenkins Nielson. She grew up in Salt Lake and graduated from South High in 1943. Following school she worked downtown at Keeley’s for several years. A cheerful, pretty and popular young woman, Lois had her choice of suitors and she decided the handsome Raymond Hollstein was the one for her. They became sweethearts and their courtship continued through Ray’s service in the U.S. Navy. After he returned home they were married on February 3, 1949 and remained together for 66 years until his death in 2015.
Lois and Ray raised five children. Lois loved her family very much and was a devoted mother, wife and grandmother, always cooking, sewing, crocheting and making birthday cakes--even for herself! Lois enjoyed being around people and socializing.
She wrote a play for her LDS Ward road show in the 1950s and she oversaw its revival production in the 1970s. She taught speech class for LDS Mutual-age kids in the 1960s. She was an avid reader and belonged to her neighborhood book club. She loved playing bridge with her card ladies every week for years, well into her 80’s, and she would never turn down a chance to play other games like cribbage, Yahtzee or dominoes with her kids and grandkids. Lois and Ray also traveled often after Ray retired which Lois enjoyed very much, but she loved being in her home most of all. We will miss her company, warm smile, good nature and home cooked Sunday dinners. We are grateful for her life and love.
Lois is survived by her five children: Claudia Stam, Clifford Hollstein (Niki), Erick Hollstein (Valerie), Rev. Joseph Hollstein (Rev. Karen Hollstein), and Catherine Hollstein. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Shirley Hollstein. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Earl Nielson, Harold “Bud” Nielson and sister Bonnie Martin.
We would like to thank the staff of Brookdale for their excellent care of Lois for the past two years. She “loved ya!”
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, 3401 S. Highland Drive. Family and friends may call at the mortuary on Sunday, February 18 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00-10:45 a.m.
