On October 28, 2019, our cherished son, brother, uncle, cousin, co-worker and best friend passed unexpectedly from natural causes after spending a glorious day on the beach near a second home he had just completed in Todos Santos, Mexico. We lost him far too soon; but if he were beside us, he would not want us to cry or mourn or be sad. He would want us to celebrate life – and what an amazing life he lived!
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah on Dec. 15, 1980 to Mark Dale Hanks and Debra Lee Hanks, Jared attended and graduated from Bountiful High School in 1999. He went on to attend and graduate in Information Technology from Utah State University in 2004. He joined the Zumiez corporate office in Seattle, WA as the fourth person on the IT team. In IT, Jared found his calling, touted by Zumiez corporate senior executives as “a technology wizard” and “a true visionary.” Jared was promoted several times, most recently to Enterprise Architect. “Working on the unknown brought out the best in Jared. He enjoyed tackling complex problems, thinking of them as puzzles that he could solve. Jared especially loved getting in a room with the teams he supported, collaborating, breaking things apart, and coming up with ways of resolving something that no one else had done before.”
But Jared, “the IT Wizard,” was only a small part of who he was. Jared loved adventure, to have fun and to make people laugh. He was authentic and genuine – a friend to all. He was adored by his 11 nieces and nephews – and he loved and adored them right back. He loved his family and Allyse, the love of his life. He embraced life; he lived each day to the fullest. He had a deep love of the outdoors. When he wasn’t working, he was outside backpacking often with his dog, Moose; rock climbing; snowboarding or just being in the mountains. He loved hanging out at the beach and traveling with his many, many friends -- or playing soccer, a sport he began playing at the age of 3. He was the goalkeeper on two 5-A high school championship teams, and went on to play for Utah State. He was an avid Sounders fan and traveled to several World Cup
tournaments with his soccer buddies. He lived a very full life in his short years. We miss you already, Jared. There will never be another you!
Jared is survived by his mother, Debra Hanks; his father, Mark (Allyson) Hanks; his sisters, Heather (Mike) Barnes and Laurel (Zach) Morgan; step siblings Andrew (Rachel) Stoddard, Alex (Amy) Stoddard, and Aaron (Kennady) Stoddard; grandmothers Barbara Sandberg and Mary Ellen Hanks; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and, the love of his life, Allyse Bourm (Seattle, WA).
