Glade S. Bigler died October 16, 2018 at age 90. He was born in Brigham City, UT to Horace J. Bigler and Marie Schow Bigler. He graduated from South High and the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science and a Juris Doctorate degree. Married Lois Aposhian in the Salt Lake Temple in 1951 with President Joseph Fielding Smith officiating. A Naval Officer during the Korean War, he served on the USS Valley Forge CV-45 and the USS Bexar APA-237. He stayed in the Naval Reserve commanding security group units in Utah and California, retiring as a Captain in 1981.
A practicing attorney for over 50 years, he served as the Chief Attorney and District Counsel for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He collaterally served for 15 years as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney and 4 years as a Hearing Officer/Administrative Law Judge. He was elected an Associate Fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine and member of the American Society of Hospital Attorneys. He served as President of the Utah Chapter of the Federal Bar Association; President of the Salt Lake Chapter National Federation of Federal Employees; President of the U of U NROTC Alumni Association; on the policy board of the Federal Executives Association; Past President of the Utah Navy Captains Club; President of the Salt Lake Chapter Reserve Officers Association and served on the Probate and Legal/Medical Committee of the Utah State Bar. After retirement he served six years on the State Legislative Committee of AARP and was appointed by Governor Leavitt to the Health Facilities Committee for four years.
He was active in scouting. He served over 75 years as a registered scout, receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1980. Always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served in many callings including Bishop of the Kenwood First Ward and on the Wilford Stake High Council, and as a Stake Clerk. With Lois he filled a 3 year Leadership mission and 2 years at the South Point Family History Center and two years as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple.
He is survived by his loving wife Lois, and his 5 children; Cathy (Randy) Redd, Nadine (Kevin) Hancey, Elaine (Arnie) Richins, Thad Bigler, and Pat (Will) Giles. 17 Grandchildren and 33 Great-Grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to Reggie from Lighten Hospice for his care and kindness.
A viewing will be held on October 19th at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on October 20th at the Kenwood First Ward 1765 East 3080 South with a viewing from 9:30AM to 10:30AM before the service.
