Obituary of Shirley Anne Andrews
Shirley Anne Burgess Andrews, 93, passed just after sunset on the Summer solstice, June 20th, 2024. All of Anne's children played an incredible role in showering her with love and support in her last few days of life. She departed surrounded with love and well wishes from family near and far. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Jack Andrews. Anne was born March 4th, 1931 in Montezuma Kansas, to Earl Burgess and Floy Hazel Kinnamon. Her parents were hard working farmers and teachers who struggled through the Dust Bowl and believed thoroughly in education. Anne had her first job at a grain mill at age eleven and was valedictorian of her high school class. She attended the University of Colorado Boulder and was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. After two years of University she married Jack, and together they built a beautiful family of seven. In their first two years of marriage, they moved over 20 times due to Jack's job as a start up engineer for oil refineries. Mark, Scott, Kirk, John, and Mary Lee were born in three different states and a foreign country. Pregnant and with four sons under the age of 10, Anne moved the family to England to join Jack who was already there. Mary Lee was born two months later. She adapted to each change of home with grace - ensuring each of her children felt her love and stability despite the chaos of a growing family and the constant need to rebuild community in new places. Her children have said it was a secret treat to take your turn washing dinner dishes because it meant you got quality time with her, and she made that special. After 5 years in England, the family returned to the states, settling in Chappaqua, New York, where Anne completed her college education, making her father very proud. She completed her degree in sociology specializing in gerontology. She then volunteered for many years as a social worker at the Mount Kisco Senior Center. When Anne and Jack retired, they moved to Virginia to be closer to their first set of grandchildren. They designed their dream home in the Key West Community of Charlottesville and lived there for many years before moving to The Colonnades. She continued to build a strong community everywhere she went through her faith and her tireless service. She became a deacon and volunteer at her beloved Westminster Presbyterian Church, as well as volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and Book Buddies of Charlottesville. She took life seriously but knew how to laugh at jokes and set-backs alike. She exuded a humble but self-assured and steady openness to the good in each person and the world. She loved her children, grandchildren, and chosen family with unyielding trust, respect, and pride. She had firm expectations for all of her children 's autonomy in adulthood - believing in their competence and the importance of independence. It is her unconditional love throughout their lives that formed such nutritious soil for each of their successes. She is survived by her children: Mark (and Ginny Nelson), Scott (and Beatriz Posada), Kirk (and Mary Herzog), John (and Beth), and Mary Lee (and Ed Drahos), and her grandchildren who knew her as Grannie Annie: John, Emily, Nick, Charlotte, Tim, Lexi, and Tori. Also surviving Anne Is Cynthia Hillocks, her chosen daughter from her New York days. We thank the many friends who kept in touch with her while in Midlothian, the staff of Spring Arbor/ Spring Arbor Cottages of Salisbury, and her aide Carol from Home Instead. Our family looks forward to celebrating her life with you. The memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian in Charlottesville at 2:00 pm on Saturday August 31, 2024. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to either: Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Charlottesville Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
