SMOOTS, Rene Wagner, 54, of Midlothian, beloved wife and mother and teacher of a generation of Midlothian High School students, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2013. A graduate of Virginia Tech, she married John P. Smoots in 1987 and settled in Midlothian, where she was the generous-hearted anchor of her family and, for 24 years, a dedicated teacher of algebra II, trigonometry, and International Baccalaureate mathematics at Midlothian High School. Rene was preceded in death by her son Jacob; and her father, Robert H. Wagner. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, John; son, Matthew Smoots, and daughter, Jessica Smoots, mother, Evelyn (Viqi) V. Wagner of Midlothian; sisters, Viqi Wagner LaRosa and her husband John, of Midlothian, and Jana Wagner of San Diego; much-loved nieces, nephews, and family members; and the many friends, neighbors, colleagues, and students who enriched her life.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian. A funeral service will be held Friday, December 6 at 3 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 2341 Winterfield Rd. Midlothian, Va. 23113, followed by a reception at Rene’s mother’s house, 600 Krim Point Loop Midlothian, Va. 23114. The family will hold a private interment at Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield. In Rene's memory, the family has established a mathematics scholarship to be awarded by Midlothian High School.
