On Friday, December 23, 1932, a child was born in Cuckoo Virginia, Louisa County to the late Pearl Nelson Minor and the late Frank "Jack" Minor. That child was named James Henry Minor. On July 25, 2022, in Powhatan County Virginia, James peacefully transitioned into eternal life to be with the Lord.
At an early age, James and his parents moved north to New Jersey. This was the beginning of prominent life journeys and achievements for him, graduating from Cooper High School, and the opportunity of getting his very first job with his father in the Foundry Industry (Industrial plant that produces metal castings) in Patterson New Jersey. In 1953, James enlisted into the United States Army, and achieved an honorable discharge from Camp Stewart Georgia in 1955.
James, who was no stranger to hard work and dedication, moved to New York City where he worked for the New York City Transit. He retired on December 29, 1984 after 20 years of committed service. After his retirement, James continued with this work ethic for another 13 years as a City Code Enforcer for the New Jersey Police Department in Montclair, New Jersey.
James and his wife, the late Helyne Minor, returned to his primary roots in Virginia residing in Powhatan County in 2002. James enjoyed traveling, music, entertaining, fishing, hunting, and was also a member of a prestigious Shooting Club, receiving numerous trophies for his extraordinary skills. He was well known for his unique, fashionable collection of clothing and jewelry, was a fabulous cook, and a devoted reader.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Nelson Minor; father, Frank "Jack" Minor; son, Stanley Minor, Sr.; brother, Garfield Nelson, Sr.; sister-in-law, Frances Nelson; brother-in law, James Wright, and special cousin, Henry Shelton.
James leaves to cherish his life and memory his sister, Diane Minor; grandson, Stanley Minor Jr.; 5 great great-grandchildren; 3 great great great-grandchildren; nieces, Kishawn Wright, Alconia Anderson (Rev. Temple), Brenda Anderson (Rodney); devoted niece & care-giver, Shirldean Callis (Sam); nephews, George Dennis Minor and Garfield Nelson Jr. (Helen); exceptional dedicated cousins, John Minor (Cookie), Henry Nelson (Barbara), Ellwood Nelson (Lorraine), Lisa Sumlin, and Patricia Sumlin; dearest friends and neighbors, Debbie and Curtis Scott, Cheryl Chris, Alease Sampa, Eva Jean and Bobby Smith, and Mildred Coles; step-daughters, Maxine Wilson Sanders (James); step-granddaughter, Renee Campbell (Lewis); and a host of other relatives and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at Noon on Thursday, August 4th at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. Entombment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave. At request of the family, masks are required for entry to the service.
