LINDSEY, Dr. James Edward, Jr., 80, of Richmond, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loved ones, on October 11, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Neale Lindsey; three daughters, Sarah Napier, Jeanie Ribble and her husband Tim Ribble, and Rebecca Nicholson and her husband Bruce Nicholson; five grandchildren, Amy Turner and her husband Christopher Turner, Lindsey and Pyper Ribble, Doug and Kyle Nicholson; and two great-grandchildren, James Edward Turner (his namesake) and William Turner. Jim got great joy from spending time with his family, whose memories of him will allow him to live on. Jim was born on May 8, 1932, in Richmond, to Lillian Floyd Lindsey and James Edward Lindsey. He was married for 58 years to his college sweetheart, Carolyn, whom he met at the University of Richmond. Jim graduated from the University of Richmond and later received both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary. He served as pastor to Rockfish and Riverside Presbyterian churches in Nelson County, and Olivet Presbyterian Church outside Charlottesville. He was a professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University for over 20 years, where he particularly valued the relationships he formed with his students. Jim was a man of many interests. He was an avid photographer, who won many prizes and whose work has been shown in local publications. Jim also loved boating and camping, especially during the winter months in the Florida Keys. He was happy in every sort of boat and particularly enjoyed living aboard his sailboat, Windborne. He was an accomplished carpenter and made many improvements to his beach house in Duck, NC, and many beautiful pieces of furniture. A memorial service will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 7343 Hermitage Road, Henrico, Virginia 23228, at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 14. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org). Online condolences to WoodyFuneralHome.com.
