Obituary of David Dawson Pedigo Sr.
David Dawson Pedigo, Sr. died peacefully on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, in Richmond, Virginia, with his loved ones by his side. He was 86-years-old. David was preceded in death by his mother and father, Leona and Roy Pedigo; his wife, Mary Lee Pedigo; and his grandson, Dawson Michael Teta. Surviving family members include David’s daughter, Stephanie Pedigo-Teta; his son-in-law, Anthony D. Teta, and their children, Dominick A. Teta, Anthony G. Teta, and Adyn Rose Teta; David’s son, David D. Pedigo, Jr. and his children, Riley A. Pedigo, and David D. Pedigo, III, (Trace). Also surviving are David’s three nieces, Elizabeth O’Brochta, Rebecca Riddle-Whitlow, and Amy Puryear, along with their husbands and children. David was born on January 25, 1936, in Roanoke, Virginia. David grew up on Allison Avenue and attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. In 1954, David graduated from Jefferson High School, and he later received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech. David married Mary Lee Deyerle on January 31, 1959. David began his career as an HVAC engineering sales representative in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he and Mary Lee started their family and were active members of Irving Park United Methodist Church. In 1976, the family relocated to Roanoke, and about a decade later, David and Mary Lee moved to Richmond when he became part owner of an HVAC engineering sales company. After Mary Lee was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, David opted for early retirement and moved to the home he built at his beloved Smith Mountain Lake. With the support of his daughter and son-in-law, David cared for Mary Lee until she “went home” in March of 2015, more than 17 years after her diagnosis. David never lost his wicked sense of humor, his love of family and parties, nor his enjoyment of touring the lake - mostly for ice cream and a good swimming cove. For many years, David ate meals at Carl’s Restaurant in Penhook where he entertained the staff by hiding tips and making jokes. Everyone at Carl’s became David’s adoptive extra family. David loved life and lived 100% independently until January of this year when he suffered a stroke. With the continued support from his family, David remained upbeat and at peace in Richmond with constant care, love, and visits from Stephanie, Anthony and Adyn. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Tunnel to Towers. A memorial service January 14, 2023 at 2:00pm at Oakey’s South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Avenue, Roanoke Virginia 24018.
