The proud son of Belvin Arnette and Carlene Capes Huffman, he was born in Greensboro, NC and raised in Roxboro, NC and Harrisonburg, VA. In late childhood, he moved to Richmond and attended Huguenot High School, Class of 1967. He attended his beloved Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Go Hokies) and finished his academic studies at the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy, Class of 1972, where he served as P-72 Class President.
A lifelong and highly respected pharmacist, he began his career washing bottles and making deliveries for Doc Martin, before working at Drug Fair, where he met his wife, Lara. He spent his 48 year pharmacy tenure serving countless patients at Buford Road, Ukrop’s, Martin’s, Wegmans and Westminster Canterbury pharmacies. Allen was a lifetime member of the Kappa Psi Pharmacy Fraternity and was humbled when awarded the Bowl of Hygeia Community Service Award in 2018 by the Virginia Pharmacists Association, a distinction given annually to a single pharmacist in Virginia for dedication to their life’s work.
Besides the people in his life, Allen loved his Hokies, the Yankees and NASCAR. While his favorite spot was at Nags Head with a fishing pole in hand, he traveled to Europe, Yankee Stadium, Tennessee, Cooperstown, and even willingly wore UVA attire to attend Virginia’s storybook 2019 National Championship run at the Final Four with his son and grandson. Along with Lara, he treasured his time at his son’s cabin in Highland County and his daughter’s river house in the Northern Neck. He was a devoted member of Huguenot Road Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lara Schumacher Huffman; son, Jason Allen Huffman (Ashley); daughter, Carrie Huffman Romano (Joseph); sister, Anna Christine “Chris” Huffman (John Hebberd); brother- and sister-in-law, Patrick and Donna Rimell; brother-in-law, James Schumacher, Jr.; nephews, Nicholas Rimell (Min) and William Zachary Rimell (Michelle Parrish); the grandchildren he adored, Cooper, Andrew, Eliza and Oliver; and his beloved cats, Snoopy and Molly.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 14, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel (1020 Huguenot Rd, Midlothian, VA 23113). Memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 15, at 11 a.m. at Huguenot Road Baptist Church (10525 W Huguenot Rd, North Chesterfield, VA 23235) with reception to follow. Burial will be private.
The family would like to recognize the outstanding support from the VCU Comprehensive Care Unit and the VCU Palliative Care Team during Allen’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, Allen requested to be remembered by passing along one of his many stories, fulfilling a good deed, or donating to any of three worthy cancer charities: The Jimmy V Foundation, American Cancer Society or St. Jude.
