She was the 5th of five children. She was reared in Brookston, TX and attended elementary school. She attended high school in Roxton, TX and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, TX and furthered her education at TSU in Houston, TX where she receive a master’s degree in education.
Mattie taught school in Midland Independent School District for 34 years and served Greater Ideal Baptist Church selflessly as clerk/secretary, sectary of Trustee Board for 25 years, member of board of directors, secretary of purchasing committee, yard maintenance, building and remodeling, member of the training union, a Sunday school teacher as well as a vacation Bible school teacher and secretary of Pastor’s aid.
Mattie is survived by her daughter Vicky Y. Payton Jones of Midland, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 7 nieces, 1 nephew and 2 great nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ennis Cole; both of her parents; son Ennis Cole Jr; Brother R.D. Hearn; sisters, Nannie Mae Payton, Sammie Joyce McCoy, and Minnie B. Brackens.
The Cole Family would like to thank St. Joseph’s Home Health care workers for their compassion and a special thanks to Joetta Frazier and Josie Martinez for services above and beyond the call of duty. The Cole family would also like to express a thank you to all who said a silent prayer, sent a card, or even said a kind word.
Pallbearers will include Ennis Jones, Eric Payton Sr., Brian Payton, T.C. Robinson, Roy Nelson and Michael Shelton. Honorary Pallbearers will include John Anders, Donald Ray Price and Milton Suggs as well as the other deacons of Greater Ideal Baptist Church who administered 1st Sunday Communion to Sister Cole.
Visitation will be held at Ellis Funeral Home on Friday, December 27, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 28th at 11:00am at Ellis Funeral Home followed by interment at Resthaven Memorial Park. A repass will be held directly after the burial at Greater Ideal Baptist Church.
