Leta “Lois” Guffey Carter was born in Midian, Kansas on September 18, 1921 to her parents Emmett Victor Guffey and Loleta Belle Robison Guffey. Her family moved to Wink, TX in 1926 and then to Midland, TX in 1934. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Midland since January 1, 1935. She was also a member of Homer Ford Sunday School Class.
She enjoyed leather and ceramic work and mixed league bowling with her husband. She was active and served several offices with Altrusa International. Even after being unable to follow all the details, she continued enjoying the ladies of En Amie Book Review Club.
She graduated from Midland High School in 1939. Upon graduation she went on to attend McMurray University in Abilene. When WW II started she transferred to Draghon’s Business College so she could finish her classes faster and return to Midland.
She met John Joseph Carter while he was training at Midland Army Air base and married on May 7,1942. They had two children John Joseph Carter, Jr, and Vicki Charlene Carter Curl Hathaway. She worked until retirement at bookkeeping as an office manager at military bases in Texas, Tennessee, Maine, New Mexico and Morocco. Upon returning to Midland she worked for Keith Unruh, CPA and later for Jack Sappington, a classmate of MHS.
She is preceded in death by her parents Loleta and Emmett Guffey; husband John J Carter, Sr.; sister and brother-in-law Loleta Lucille and Lige Irwin Midkiff; sister and brother-in-law Elda Francis and Howard J. Atwater; life-long Midland friends J.P.H. “Pat” and Betty McMullan; W.G. and Ruth Ray.
She is survived by her son John J Carter, Jr.; daughter Vicki C Hathaway and her husband Wayne L Hathaway; grandchildren: Jennifer (Rod) Rose, Jason (Shannon) Hathaway, Jana (Jeremy) Anderson; great-grandchildren: Casey, Kaitlyn and Delaney Rose, Michael and Sierra Anderson, Nicholas, Brayden and Gabriel Hathaway; nieces and nephews: Lige Irwin (Stacey) Midkiff, Jr., Thomas Guffey (Joan) Midkiff, Dana Dee ( Carlos) Midkiff Little Andrade, James (Mary) Atwater, Connie (Jerry) Foote, Bonnie Atwater. Cousin Bill (Lois) Moler. Friend for 70 years, Joyce Elder.
Thank you to Dr. PK Patel who improved her quality of life; Martha Ramirez who spent years assisting her at home, and the people at Yellow Rose who took great care of her to the end.
She will lie In-State on Thursday, December 12, 2013 from 12:00 – 9:00 pm at Ellis Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at First United Methodist Church at 3:00 pm. There will be a private burial at Resthaven Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Homer Fort Fellowship class at First United Methodist Church, 300 North Main St, Midland, TX 79701.
