She was born in Ajo, Arizona on May 30, 1924 to Ruth Cromer and Alfred T. Barr. After graduation from Ajo High School she attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1946. While teaching Junior High School in El Paso, Texas she attended the University of Texas at El Paso and earned a Master of Education degree.
She married Robert “Bob” Fitting on August 16, 1968, in Midland. He preceded her in death in 1996. She is survived by four children, Drinda Louise Green of Tucson; Alfred Barr Green and his wife, Terri of Overgaard, Arizona; Nan Skinner Freeman and her husband, Ray of Houston; Dikka Fitting Amuchastegui and her husband, Rafael of Miami, Florida. One niece, Jennifer Barr Franklin and husband Darrel of Canyon. Four grandchildren, Daniel Green and wife Scarlett of Atlanta, Georgia; Carrie Skinner Heinley and her husband B.J. of Austin; Lucas Green and his wife Lorien of Jacksonville, Florida and Neal Skinner and his wife, Jenny of Lewisville and eight great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Green Thumb “Go-Go” Garden Club, the Lt. William Brewer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, First Presbyterian Church, Midland Country Club and the Petroleum Club of Midland. She was a supporter of Midland Festival Ballet and enjoyed attending the holiday performance of The Nutcracker and the Spring Gala each year. Jan was always ready to help her family and friends when in need, a loyal wife, mom and friend, she loved to cook and travel in equal measure.
The family would like to recognize Murlene Holmes Richards for her long time friendship and service to the family spanning seven decades. Also, special thanks to George E. Clark, David Kleinbeck and Rodney Robinson for their friendship and support extended to Jan. The family thanks Belia for the wonderful care she gave to “Ms. Jan.”
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church in Midland. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Condolences may be made at: www.ellisfuneral.com.
